In previous decades, taking cybersecurity seriously was unheard of. But in today’s world of modern business, we have to deal with a huge variety of potential issues and security threats. In the past, business would be conducted exclusively using paper and written documentation. Security would involve physical building security and the correct storage and protection of archived data. Today business is predominantly conducted digitally, and the internet and networking are used daily to facilitate business on a larger and quicker scale.

The advent of digital technology has also introduced a new type of security threat, however – Taking Cybersecurity Seriously. Cyber attacks are real and potentially hugely dangerous – Unscrupulous individuals or organisations can bring down a whole businesses financial system in a matter of minutes. Would your business be prepared for such an attack? Would you know how to deal with such a situation? Ensuring your taking cybersecurity seriously as your business is paramount and these four steps will help indefinitely.

1. Know thy enemy!

Knowledge is power. This age old statement holds true for cybersecurity. If you have no idea of the potential threats then how can you identify them and take action? As a business, you must learn about cyber threats and what potential hazards you could fall prey too. Conduct research or seek the advice of a professional IT business. Once you understand the different types of attack such as viruses, spyware, and DDoS, you can pre-arm yourself, and also watch for their tell-tale signs.

2. Ensure your staff are aware of the risks and are trained accordingly.

The knowledge you have learned should then be passed on to your staff. If you are personally aware of cyber attacks and how to identify them, but your staff are not, they could still unwittingly fall prey to a malicious attack on your business. Provide them with IT security training material and ensure they follow standardised procedures for such processes as browsing the web and dealing with emails. The importance of taking cybersecurity seriously should be impressed at all levels of your business.

3. Create a fail-safe plan to deal with cyber attacks.

Now that you and your staff are armed with a plethora of knowledge, you must create a backup plan that will protect your assets and data in the event of a cyber attack. This plan should detail how your data will remain safe and what measures each member of staff should take. Your data and business information can remain protected using anti-virus software and high-level network security.

Furthermore, you should consider including in the plan a regular data backup to an off-site secure location or to a separate server or set of external hard drives. This will ensure that some form of your data remains intact if your primary servers and storage devices are compromised. Ensure that the plan is clearly documented and that all members of your staff are clear on the processes put in place.

4. Report any potential cyber attacks promptly.

Finally, it is important to immediately report any attacks or even any attempted attacks. This will ensure that counter-action is taken and that the attackers are pursued.

By taking cybersecurity seriously and instilling your staff with a positive and pro-active attitude, you can improve your own business security greatly. It is also advisable to see the professional help and advice of specialised IT business that deals with IT security and can help implement advanced security systems on your behalf.
